Bleeding Gums Treatment: What Causes Gums To Bleed

Bleeding of any kind is never a good sign, but bleeding gums could be indicative of serious oral health issues. While some people might be inclined to ignore a little bit of blood when flossing—especially if it’s only just a little bit—it’s important to take note and change your oral health habits

    Why do my gums bleed?

Why are my gums bleeding while flossing?

It’s possible that your gums may be bleeding when you floss if you’re flossing too hard. It’s possible to bruise and scratch the gums when flossing, which can cause the gums to bleed. Remember to be gentle with your delicate gums when you floss or switch to an electric water-based flossing device to prevent gum damage.

If the problem persists and if you’re not flossing excessively, which can cause damage and bleeding, it could be a more serious issue you and your dental professional may need to address.

Are there other causes of bleeding gums?

Bleeding gums is an early warning sign of gingivitis. Gingivitis can lead to larger oral health issues, such as gum disease, so it’s important to treat it seriously. Fortunately, gingivitis—especially in these early stages—can be easy to treat.

How to treat gingivitis and stop bleeding gums

If your bleeding gums are caused by the early stages of gingivitis, the solution is simple: expand your oral health routine. Thoroughly brush your teeth twice a day and floss once a day to address the oral hygiene issues that can lead to gingivitis.

When you brush your teeth, remember to brush all over your teeth, and even onto the gum line as well. The same goes for flossing: floss up and down between each tooth gap and even slide it gently up into the gum line, just don’t force the floss into your gums and cause damage to your gums. Plaque mostly settles on our teeth, but it can also settle under our gums so it’s important to take care of our whole mouths.

If routine oral care doesn’t solve the problem, speak to your dentist for professional help. They may be able to offer a treatment for your bleeding gums and offer personalised advice on how to take care of your teeth.

    How to prevent bleeding gums

The best treatment method is always to prevent a problem from occurring. To prevent gingivitis and bleeding gums, you need to take proper care of your teeth and gums.

Brush your teeth and gums every morning and floss then brush every evening. Use mouthwash that’s low in acid and high in fluoride to wash over your teeth and gums for added protection.

You can also adjust your diet to cut out excessively sugary and acidic foods that can damage your tooth enamel, but that shouldn’t be necessary in most cases. Regular brushing and flossing should keep your teeth healthy. Regularly visit your dentist for check-ups and professional advice to maintain those pearly whites.

    How can Philips Sonicare help?

Sometimes what we need to take proper care of our teeth are the proper tools. Switching from a manual toothbrush to an electric toothbrush can help you keep your teeth clean and healthy. The Philips Sonicare toothbrushes can help because the brush head is continually brushing and isn’t reliant on precise hand movements. A Sonicare toothbrush can also help you brush those harder to reach areas of your mouth. Our Sonicare DiamondClean smart toothbrush can be synced to an app for a superior clean that takes the guesswork out of proper dental care.

Electric toothbrushes also have specifically designed brush heads with bristle arrangements that complement the brush’s movements. You never have to worry if you’re supposed to brush up and down or side to side, the brush takes care of that for you, you just have to get it in the right spot.
