So close, yet so far...I had two search criteria when looking for a new alarm clock radio. It had to have a display that would not illuminate the entire bedroom at night, and I wanted an iPhone dock. Simple, I thought...
I found the Philips AJ6200DB and it seemed to fit my requirements:
Low emitting light display - check.
iPhone dock - check.
Thought I had achieved until I arrived home. I quickly discovered that my search criteria was deficient after setting it up.
The bad:
It has no AM band radio!!! What the..? What radio does not have an AM function? How are we supposed to listen to our national broadcaster that my tax money is paying for?! Seriously! Has Philips looked at the radio ratings for breakfast radio in Australia?!
The alarm has no control over the level of the desired sound to be woken too. Every different alarm clock I have ever encountered and used for decades has always had the ability to set the volume for the alarm radio function. The AJ6200DB may have a gentle wake feature, but by the time I'm awake its already booming! A severe oversight by Philips.
The good:
The sound quality is good for a mono speaker system, the display doesn't light up the room at night, and it charges my phone.
All in all, a lost opportunity for Philips. So close, yet so far...

It does what I wantI have this radio working no w and it does what I bought it for.
My problems were in setting it up. I dislike the trend to print instructions in pale colours and small fonts rather than black as my eyesight is not that good. Download the instructions for easier reading.
Also the labels printed on the case are very difficult to read. It took me an hour to get set up as a result.
Be warned that it is a 24 hour display so set it up in the morning.
I like being able to,put my iPhone on the dock and know it will charge without fuss.
Generally it is clunky but it works.

Alarm to wake the deadI like the features available on this clock, but the biggest let down is the 'gentle wake'. The volume is unavle to be adjusted and blasts out at a level that makes you jump out of bed with fright.
Wish i hadnt bought it as i can not return it to Dick Smith.

Great Sound but too much of itThis has a great sound and easy to use Phillips Interface but I agree with other reviews - completely let down by The inability to change Alarm volume .The claim that it wakes you up gently on radio is false
Better used as a radio rather than Alarm clock

Loud radio alarm that can't be adjustedDisappointed that I've thrown the packaging as it would have gone back.... the gentle wake up radio alarm blasts you out of bed.... no listening to the news before getting out of bed unless you like being shouted at!

Gentle wake?!?I had/have a Philips alarm radio/dock (AJ301DB), which I replaced with this one, as the old one only has the apple 30pin connector not the lighting plug.
The Gentle wake on that unit is brilliant so when I saw this one advertised at a good price, jumped at it.
Wished I had read this review page first though....... the gentle wake on the new/this unit is not existent, it goes top volume straight away. Very very very disappointed especially since the Philips product page makes such a big deal about it.
Back to the old AJ301DB as I HATE the instant volume!!

The alarm clock that can't be used for an alarm clockInitially I loved this product. Phone plugs in the top, iPad can charge when plugged in the side. Very stylish design and so easy to operate with the knobs on the front and great sound for a single speaker. The display is smaller than I wanted but is so crisp and clear I can easily see it from the other side of the room.
Then comes the downside... It is advertised the alarm comes on gently and gradually gets louder the wake you up. This sounds great but in reality the alarm turns on at volume setting 7 and blasts you with loud music at 5 in the morning.
I contacted support who claimed to never have heard of this before and suggested I return it for a replacement. Well now I am on my 3rd replacement and they all have the same issue. I doubt any of them actually wake you gently. I will be returning this for a refund later this week, which is a shame as it had so much potential.

Great design and performance for the priceThe functions are great, the design is well thought out and the size is appropriate for what it is. The sound quality is very good and the multiple alarms is definitely a plus.
My only issue is that the display turns off unless i have my phone connected, there are times when it stays on but eventually it turns off by itself. Im not sure if this is meant to happen but it is annoying when you want to see the time but it doesnt show unless you dock your phone. I have tried using different power outlets around the house but this problem persists.
