    What is obstructive sleep apnoea?

    What is obstructive sleep apnoea?

Obstructive sleep apnoea is a common sleep disorder characterised by repeated interruptions in breathing throughout the sleep cycle.

These interruptions, called apnoeas, are caused by the collapse of soft tissue in the airway, which prevents oxygen from reaching the lungs. Sleep apnoea can have a serious impact on energy, mental performance, and long-term health—but there are effective treatments available to counteract these symptoms.*

Learn more about sleep apnoea diagnosis and treatment.

Philips Healthcare proudly presents our Australian Pharmacy Sleep Service (APSS) sleep apnoea program. The APSS sleep apnoea program is a quick, easy and comfortable way to get diagnosed and treated for Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) – without the need for a doctor referral.

    How it works:

Step 1: Find your local APSS pharmacy* who offers the APSS sleep apnoea program

Step 2: Take your sleep apnoea quiz results there to discuss your sleep health and get help, if required.

Step 3: Your local APSS pharmacy* can also easily identify if you are at risk of OSA through a set of simple screening questions if you haven’t taken the online quiz

Step 4: If the results indicate you are at risk of OSA, your pharmacy can arrange a home sleep test

Step 5: You have to wear a simple sleep test device in the comfort of your own bed and at your regular bedtime

Step 6: When you wake up in the morning you simply remove the device and return it to your pharmacy

Step 7: The sleep test is analysed by a Sleep Physician and results are shared within 10 days, which your pharmacy staff will discuss with you

Step 8: If diagnosed positive for OSA, your pharmacist will discuss with you the best options to manage your OSA for a healthier, better sleep

*If your pharmacy does not have the APSS sleep apnoea program, call 1300 761 006 to find another pharmacy near you who offers this program.
