How To Wet Shave Your Face

2 min read – 03:33 video
When it comes to shaving, you can choose to either wet or dry shave. Both have their benefits but we know that there’s nothing like a wet shave to make you feel fresh and ready for the day ahead. A dry shave is recommended for those with sensitive skin but if this isn’t a problem for you and you want the smooth, clean shave that a wet shave can provide then you’ve come to the right place. As the name suggests, a wet shave involves the use of water and shaving products such as shaving foam or shaving gel. Here’s what the experts recommend when learning how to have a wet shave with a wet and dry electric shaver.

1. Pre-trim your facial hair

If you haven’t shaven for a few days and have more than short stubble, then pre-trim before shaving. You can use a beard trimmer or styler attachment. There’s a chance long hair can get caught in a razor so you want to make sure it’s pretty short, short enough to shave.

2. Cleanse

Wash your face with lukewarm water and a face wash that suits your skin type.

3. Lather up

For a wet shave, you can use products like shaving foam or gel. A dot of shaving gel or about a walnut-sized ball of foam is plenty. Lather and apply to your wet face. This will help you achieve a smoother, closer shave.

4. Choose a setting

If your shaver has different comfort settings, now’s the time to choose one. If you’re not sure which is best, try wet shaving a small area of your face with each to find the setting that feels best.

5. Gentle circular motions

Shave with small, circular motions. Always start with light pressure, especially in sensitive areas. Pressing too hard doesn't help you to shave faster and the increased friction can cause skin irritation.

6. Rinse your shaver regularly

To improve the performance of your wet dry shaver, rinse it under the tap to remove excess foam and hair as you’re shaving. This keeps the blades clean and helps minimise the risk of skin irritation. It also makes the wet shave easier for you.

7. Final pass

For an even closer shave, increase the pressure at the end, while moving against the grain. Again, be careful in sensitive areas.

8. Difficult hairs

If you’re having trouble catching those last few hairs, stretch your skin a little to raise the hairs and shave the spots that are difficult to reach. Go slowly and gently. A wet shave can cause skin irritation if done incorrectly so the best way to do it is by being slow and gentle and never using too much pressure.

9. Sideburns

Use a trimmer or styler attachment to trim your sideburns.

10. Aftershave

You can use cool water to rinse off your face and then apply an aftershave or balm. Not only does this keep you looking, feeling and smelling fresh but it also protects your skin. For extra skin protection, keep your skin moisturised with a gentle facial moisturiser — and you’re ready to go!

For best results and to keep your skin used to the electric shaver, it’s best to shave at least three times a week.

Don’t forget to clean your shaver after use for optimal performance and hygiene. Rinse it with lots of lukewarm water, shake off the excess and lay it down open to dry.
