Clock Radio

Having built digital clocks before they became a commercial product, the one thing that I needed to design was to help with my red/green colour blindness, for example i find is extrremely difficult to see red LED's, blue was the best and perfect for night time but green was ok. This clock's LEDs are good for red/green colour issues. Setting the clock is not much different to any digital clock and is typically a feature of the chip used. Overall and even since it was discountinued I like this product.

I've seen a lot of shocking 1 star reviews for this clock radio on other websites. I must say, the clock radio works perfectly fine! It was super easy to program, has 12 hour (not just 24hr as suggested elsewhere) clock. Digital FM/AM tuner which is great, 3 brightness settings. The ONLY thing I don't like is the speaker quality! It's very crackly. Oh and the battery back up is x2 "AAA" 1.5v batteries NOT a 9v battery as normal and suggested.

The features are simple, easy to use and typical of Philips products. Thank you.

Our old clock radio died and i read the reviews on this one, but bought it anyway. It was only difficult to set the time because the printing on the instructions were so small i needed a magnifying glass to read it. We love the gentle green display - the old red one was too bright in bed at night.

Easy to set up, just follow the instructions provided. Fantastic big display. Duel alarm a great feature. Brightness adjustment an essential. Only small downside is max volume not that loud.

Went for the dearer option thinking it would be a good product. Nothing but a confusing, difficult unit to use. Radio alarm cannot be manually adjusted as per instructions so it just keeps getting louder and louder. Good thinking!!! Display has to be at dimmist at night to sleep then unreadable at day.

Well I think I must be one of the very few people who bought this clock radio and actually like it. I've been using it for about 2 weeks now, and so can give a fair review on it. I bought it to replace my old clock radio which took up too much space on my bedside table, and the volume dial had become loose. This Philips unit is the perfect size for me with a small footprint. I also liked how it has buttons for adjusting the volume rather than a dial. I only use this unit to wake me up in the morning, and for that it's great. I actually like how the volume gradually gets louder as with my old radio I had to adjust the volume if I was using a fan on warm nights. With this unit I don't have to. The gradual volume increase also wakes me up a little more gently - but I do have the radio set to Classic FM! I also like the dual alarm feature - I can set one alarm for weekdays and another for the weekend. The radio station presets were easy to set, and the radio reception is clear, and sound quality is good for a clock radio. The ability to adjust the brightness is handy. The dimmest setting is OK for nighttime, but is hard to read during the day. But that said, I rarely have to look at it during the day and my bedroom is fairly dark anyway so it's not an issue. I would also prefer the display colour to be red rather than green as I find red a little easier on my eyes at night. A really good feature would be to let you choose from a range of colours - quite a few products with LED lights have this these days. I found the instructions supplied with the unit were a little cryptic, but I downloaded the full instructions from the Philips website and these were much clearer. I had no trouble setting the time, alarm and radio. As for the 24h/12h time setting, mine is a 12h clock. I would have liked the option to change it but it's not a big deal for me. Overall I'm very happy with my new clock radio.

How do you change the time display from 24 hr to 12 hr display

A very nice little radio with surprisingly Good Sound Quality for a clock radio. Normally speakers on these items sound fairly "tinny" but this radio has a nice 'Mellow' sound. Very easy to set up, the only problem I've struck is obtaining 24 hr time. Supposed to have both 12 & 24 but no matter what faces I pull, can't manage 24 hr time (preferred). Not a deal breaker but was one of the reasons for choosing this model. Otherwise, very pleased.

[1] I had the opposite problem where I wanted 24-hour time but there was only 12-hour. The Specifications web page shows both but the instructions don't show how to change this. [2] There are three levels of light intensity (the Specifications web page shows two# However, I find it is still too bright. It would be nice to either build in an LDR which varies the LED intensity based on ambient light levels AND\OR have a potentiometer for users to fine tune the LED light level. [3] The increasing volume when the alarm is triggered is annoying because it increases too quickly. It would be nice to just listen to the radio in bed for a while without having to turn the alarm off and then turn the radio on. How about Philips changes the design so alarm 1 increases the volume while alarm 2 just plays the buzzer\radio at the volume level set by the user. Furthermore, with regard to the alarm with increasing volume, after the alarm is stopped, the volume should go back to what the user previously set - and NOT to volume level 7 which is the most annoying thing about this clock radio. [4] While in bed, you can't distinguish which button is the radio. How about you add a raised "dot" #nipple# on the button so people can feel for the correct button. [5] When selecting a radio station using the Preset button - the unit displays the preset number #Pnn) for far too long. People are more interested in seeing the station frequency they selected. Just flash up the present very briefly and then show the frequency as this is what people recognise to most. If you change the above, you'll have the perfect alarm clock radio.
