Find out how to maintain a beard and keep it healthy with our essential beard care tips

Growing a great beard is something to be proud of. But the journey doesn’t end once the desired length or style has been achieved. You need to know how to keep your beard healthy and how to keep it looking fresh. After all it’s not a huge leap from ‘man with impressive beard’ to ‘grizzly forest man’. Once you have mastered beard styling, you need to master beard maintenance – and keeping your beard looking smart and stylish is no mean feat. Here’s everything you need to know about how to maintain a beard.

5 tips for proper beard care and maintenance

    1. When caring for a beard, remember that it’s always on the move. Trim beard.

The first thing is to recognise that your beard and moustache are always growing, so your perfectly trimmed facial hair is always just a few short days away from a return to the wild. The general rule with beard care is that the shorter the hair, the more often it needs to be trimmed. If you have a closely-trimmed style, make time every other day to keep it sharp. If you have a full beard, once or twice a week may be enough. It’s up to you how neat and maintained you want your beard to look but remember if you choose a beard style that requires a bit more upkeep, you’ll need to make the time to maintain it. These considerations can help when it comes to choosing a beard style.

    2. Cleanliness is key for proper beard care. Clean beard.

Neglect has consequences. If your morning routine is just a quick splash of water over your face, your beard may complain that it isn’t getting enough attention. Keep facial hair looking and smelling pleasant by shampooing it when you take a shower and adding a touch of conditioner if your hair is coarse or rough. For that extra touch of TLC, your beard may thank you for investing in a beard wash and a beard conditioner. The skin on your scalp is not the same as the skin on your face so using products specifically made for beards can add that extra touch of softness and keep your beard looking a little healthier.

    3. Tame unruly facial hair with a few beard care products. Style Beard.

Facial hair is fairly unique. For some men, it grows neatly downwards, while for others it rebelliously sticks straight out. If yours does the latter, dab on some beard oil and comb the hairs downwards to take the edge off as part of your daily beard care. Make sure your beard is dry to avoid irritation. Beard oil softens the hairs, while pomade can be used to shape your beard or moustache into your chosen style. This keeps your beard looking healthy and maintained. You don’t have to fill your bathroom with dozens of expensive products, just cover the basics. A beard comb, beard oil and beard pomade serve as a good base for your beard maintenance kit.

    4. Get the right beard care tools for the job. Maintain Beard.

If you’re serious about caring for your beard (and looking good) your bathroom toolkit should include a beard trimmer (including a trimmer comb and a precision attachment) and a rotary shaver. Some tools have several different features, enabling you to do more than one job with the same device.

    5. Caring for your beard means leaving it be. Enjoy beard.

To preserve cleanliness, avoid touching or stroking your beard too much, and try to avoid giving it food. Trim the hairs around your lips, and master eating and drinking without getting anything stuck in the region around your mouth. Beard care is a rewarding part of the beard process. It’s all about perfecting the masterpiece on your face and keeping it healthy and well looked after. Don’t forget to relax and enjoy the process.

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, wear your beard and/or moustache with pride. You didn’t grow yourself a beard to hide it under a bushel.
