How to Trim a Short Beard

1 min read - 02:00 video

If you’re comfortable with a stubble beard, maybe it’s time to take the next step and grow a full-on short beard?

A short beard hugs the face without hiding its shape, so it best suits square or oblong faces. Short beard styles are all about maintenance. Getting (and keeping) your short beard looking appropriately suave takes time and patience. This style of beard is a popular classic. Allowing a man to rock the full on beard while still looking neat and maintained, it’s the beard for the well-groomed everyday man. Read on to master the technique of taming the short beard.

Here’s how to shape and trim a short beard:

Step 1: Grow it out

Patience is key here – you will need an adequate length in order to shape your short beard and it is always best to leave it too long as you can always trim it back even more. Hang in there, the results are worth the wait. When your facial hair is at least 2 cm long, wash and dry your beard and comb it downwards. For that extra touch, use beard wash and beard conditioner. It makes the hairs softer which makes trimming and combing easier. Try to comb your beard when dry as it leads to less breakage and irritation. Use your favourite beard comb for this step.

Step 2: Shape it up

Now it’s time to shape the beard. A precise beard trimmer is your friend here. Shape your neck and cheek lines then clean up under your lower lip. A good tip is to start with the rogue hairs around the edges and then work your way in. Symmetry and clean edges are key here. Take your time on this step.

Step 3: Trim it down

Now trim your beard evenly to the desired length. The shortness of your beard is your call. You want it full but subdued. Use a comb attachment or zoom wheel, if your trimmer has one, to achieve consistent hair length all around.

Step 4: Finishing touch

Comb your beard out, tidy up around the moustache, and check one last time for symmetry. Achieving symmetry is one of the key skills to master in shaping and maintaining most beards and the short beard is no exception. The right equipment is important here so use all the tools at your disposal to create a short beard you’re happy with.

Step 5: Shave

Finally, shave your cheeks and neck for a well-maintained appearance. Defined edges matter when it comes to the short beard so make sure you have really mastered the art of clean shaving the areas around your beard. It’s a small detail but one that can really help your beard be all that it can be.

Styling & maintenance

Short beard styles should be trimmed every other day to stay looking sharp. For a little extra TLC keep your beard clean with a beard wash and finish off with a beard oil. The skin on your face is different to the skin on your scalp so keeping your beard soft and moisturised not only looks good but can help with flaky skin and irritation. Only the best for your beard. Now all that’s left to do is get out there and show off your glorious short beard!
