      Better care for more people

      Bridging gaps in healthcare

      Australia research findings
Timely access to quality care remains under pressure. Leaders in Australia strive to make the healthcare system environmentally sustainable as they address workforce shortages, growing patient demand and financial challenges. Data, automation and virtual care, powered by AI, are helping to expand care capacity and meet patients where they are.

This year’s report focuses on critical gaps and examines ways of overcoming them.
Circular infographic showing that 97% of organisations report at least one data integration challenge that affects their ability to deliver timely, high-quality care.

Bar chart showing the top clinical and operational tasks impacted by data integration challenges: 41% cite clinical documentation and note-taking, 41% equipment maintenance and monitoring, 37% workflow prioritization, and 37% patient check-in.
Automation and virtual care are empowering an overstretched workforce

Leaders believe automation can elevate healthcare professionals' skills and are planning to implement it widely over the next three years. Top 4 areas where healthcare leaders plan to implement automation to improve productivity and ease staff shortages within the next 3 years.

Bar chart comparing Australia and the global average on sustainability actions in healthcare: 60% of Australian respondents versus 49% globally recycle waste wherever possible; 54% versus 35% prioritize sustainable procurement including circular equipment; and 45% versus 42% focus on reducing energy use or improving energy efficiency.
      World-class commitment to a climate-resilient future

Australia's healthcare leaders understand the importance of environmental sustainability for system resilience and cost savings. Most are already implementing strategies to reduce their carbon footprint and address the industry’s impact on planetary health.

Facing staffing shortages, data silos, and a ticking sustainability clock, we can tinker within silos or tear them down to build something transformational. Innovation thrives on collaboration, not complacency. Let’s rewrite the script for better care.

The Future Health Index is commissioned by Philips

The Future Health Index 2024 report explores how healthcare leaders view their hospital’s ability to deliver timely, high-quality care to everyone. A quantitative survey was conducted among almost 3,000 healthcare leaders from 14 countries (Australia, Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Poland, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Africa, the United Kingdom and the United States). This was supplemented by eight qualitative interviews of healthcare leaders, two from each of the following countries: Singapore, South Africa, the United Kingdom and the United States. Both the quantitative and qualitative research stages were conducted between December 2023 – March 2024
