Is Teeth Whitening Safe? - Teeth Whitening Side Effects

    Is teeth whitening safe?

Achieving whiter, cleaner teeth is something a lot of people are interested in. After all, a whiter smile can lead to improved confidence, a more outgoing personality, and better happiness overall. But there’s a lot of worry about the safety of teeth whitening. Does teeth whitening damage enamel? Is teeth whitening bad for your teeth? Are teeth whitening kits safe?

The answer is this: if you’re following a dentist or dental professional-recommended practice, teeth whitening is safe. That’s not to say that any product claiming to be dentist-recommended is safe, but what your dental professional recommends to you personally will be safe.

The best way to whiten your teeth is with a dental professional-administered whitening procedure.

Extensive research and clinical studies indicate that whitening teeth under the supervision of a Zoom trained and accredited dentist not only gives you the whitest teeth, it's also very safe. Zoom is the only whitening formula that contains relief ACP, which actually gives you greater lustre and protects enamel. As a result, the Zoom teeth whitening treatment has no adverse effect on existing restorations (fillings or crowns) nor does it rub away, soften, damage or weaken the enamel.

Are there any teeth whitening side effects?

Immediately after treatment, some people experience the minor and temporary side effect of increased tooth sensitivity. This means cold foods may feel colder the day after your tooth whitening session with your dentist.

This symptom disappears within one to three days after the treatment and shouldn’t be cause for concern.

Some people may experience the sensitivity more extremely than others. While one person may be able to enjoy a scoop of ice cream with only mild discomfort, another person may find it uncomfortable to eat something like ice cream at all.

Your dental professional will be able to advise you on any side effects. They may also administer a fluoride gel to help minimise any temporary sensitivity. Speak to your dentist if you’re worried about sensitivity and they will be able to help.

The safety of carbamide peroxide vs hydrogen peroxide

Teeth whitening is typically done with one of two active ingredients—either carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide.

Both of these agents will whiten your teeth, though there is some confusion if one is safer than the other. The good news is, they’re both completely safe, so long as they’re administered correctly.

Your dentist will likely administer a protective gel to your gums and only apply the whitening agent to your teeth so that you’re perfectly safe. Neither carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide will eat away at your enamel or damage your mouth, so long as they’re applied properly.

The efficiency of carbamide peroxide vs hydrogen peroxide

With both of these agents being as safe as each other, the question of which is more efficient often comes up.

Hydrogen peroxide can often whiten teeth faster. This means sitting in your dentist’s chair for a shorter amount of time than if your dentist opted for carbamide peroxide.

Of course, it’s not all good news for hydrogen peroxide. Carbamide peroxide is often the cheaper option. They both do the same job, neither features more side effects than the other. If you have the option to choose between the two, it often comes down to how quickly you want to complete your teeth whitening.

Are at-home teeth whitening kits safe?

All at-home teeth whitening kits have to be thoroughly reviewed and deemed safe before they can be sold to customers. However, that doesn’t mean they should be used with abandon.

It’s always a smart idea to speak to a dental professional before doing any kind of teeth whitening. They will be able to suggest methods for teeth whitening and best practices to keep you safe. Most best practices will be written on the packaging of at-home whitening kits, such as the directive to not use the product for prolonged periods of time.

A dental professional may be able to help you choose a personalised take-home kit that’s designed specifically for your teeth with a tray that’s moulded for your mouth. The Philips Zoom! take-home kits provide professional results at home. The Zoom! NiteWhite kit even works overnight so you can whiten your teeth while asleep.

These kits are safe and easy to use yourself, so long as all directions are followed.

    Does teeth whitening hurt?

The common side effect of tooth sensitivity can cause some pain after the whitening procedure, and it’s important to consider before committing to teeth whitening.

It is possible to feel some discomfort during the whitening procedure, which is why speaking to your dentist or dental professional before is important. They will be able to help you if you experience discomfort and react appropriately. Most of the time though, this discomfort is temporary and fades quickly.

Is teeth whitening during pregnancy safe?

While teeth whitening while pregnancy is technically safe, most professionals will recommend you wait until after giving birth to whiten teeth. This is because teeth whitening is not immediately necessary and is purely aesthetic.

Many professionals will recommend waiting until after the birth to whiten your teeth simply because sitting in the dentist’s chair for prolonged periods of time while pregnant is often very uncomfortable. Some whitening procedures make use of specialty lighting, which means you can’t move during the whitening. This can be hard at the best of times but especially so while pregnant.

At-home whitening kits can be used while pregnant, but it’s still recommended to wait until the child is born.

    Is teeth whitening worth it?

Unfortunately, there’s no yes or no answer to the question of “should I whiten my teeth?” As mentioned before, teeth whitening is a purely aesthetic procedure that doesn’t affect your oral health at all. For some, this is reason to not bother.

For others, it can drastically improve their quality of life. Whiter teeth can make people more likely to smile, laugh, and live life to the fullest.

If you decide to whiten your teeth, speak to your dental professional first so that they can help you get the pearly whites you want.

Of course there are other ways to get whiter teeth. If you don't want professional or at home teeth whitening, you can try uprgading your eletric toohbrush and following an oral hygiene routine. Our Philips Sonicare ProtectiveClean toothbrush offers you a gentle clean with whitening results.
