Lionel Messi, perhaps the greatest footballer of his generation, did something pretty remarkable in March, he became Barcelona’s all time leading goal scorer at the age of just 24. To put that in perspective, the former leading top goalscorer Cesar Rodriguez took 13 years to score his 232 goals at Barca, Messi broke his record in only 8.

Some people say it’s Lionel Messi’s out-of-this-world ball control that’s behind his success, some say it’s his surprising speed on the ball, but we think it could be something completely different. We think Messi’s success comes from…his hair.

Just think about it. Can you ever remember a time when this football wonderkid didn’t have his trademark overgrown pudding bowl look?

Didn’t think so. It’s has been an ever-present during his career, even as a child he rocked this look and he’s been pretty good at kicking a football ever since.

Luck is a fine thing

Ok, so Messi’s look isn’t going to win any awards for stylistic merit or variation in the field of haircuts but he knows what he likes and he sticks to it. He’s got a good thing going and we say, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.  True, he may have trimmed back his long locks a bit this season but when you get a bit older you become a bit more style conscious.

Here’s the science bit

We’re not scientists or even sports scientists. But we do know a thing or two about made-up football theories, so here’s a few on why Lionel Messi’s hair makes him such a great player:

·        The weight of Messi’s hair gives him an even lower centre of gravity enabling him to be closer to the ball and thus giving him better control.

·        Being as small as Messi has its downsides. It makes heading the ball quite hard which is why having a natural additional to his height in the form of a fluffy mane has its advantages

·        Here’s a simple maths equation for you: Long hair = power.

Samson, He-Man, Conan the Barbarian, Mick Jagger, Johnny Depp. Enough said.
