Self-expression is good for you

Jeremy White - Skateboard

If something’s good it’s worth singing about, and “express yourself” has been a focal lyric for artists as varied as Madonna, Charles Wright and New Order. The general consensus? Why, self-expression is good for you, of course! We have a chance to stamp our personality on everything we do in our day-to-day lives and in doing so stand out to make the ordinary just a little bit extraordinary.

You may have already met our self-expression heroes, which we found after we combed the globe looking for natural talent. These three guys turn the regular into the irregular with a simple injection of self-expression.

For Los Angeles-based curb-side sign spinner, Jeremy White it’s all about enjoyment: “I once heard someone say, ‘don’t fight the fun’. I thought about it and I realised that there were a lot of aspects of my life where I just wasn’t letting the fun in,” he says.

At this point he started getting creative with his sign spinning, turning his ordinary into the eye-catching extraordinary by entertaining drivers on an LA curb-side and drawing them towards the car wash he promotes. Jeremy says his shift towards self-expression changed his life for the better – including that of the people around him.

“I’m not just there to hold a sign, I’m there to entertain people,” says Jeremy. “People honestly say that I’ve made their day.”

Your day, your environment – it’s all a blank canvas for personal self-expression, according to Jeremy.

“With the right attitude, everything can be a performance,” he believes. “Everything from making your bed to making a spreadsheet, just walking down the street can be your art.”
