How do I descale my Philips Automatic Espresso machine?

Our Philips espresso machines come in different series. Please read on to find the correct instructions for your machine.

Which instructions apply to my Philips espresso machine?

The instructions to follow depend on the Philips series you have.

From left to right in the picture, the following models are shown:
Philips 4000, Philips 3100, Philips 3000 (no display), Philips 2100 Easy Cappuccino, Philips 2000 (with/without control dial)

Philips 4000 and 3100 series, machines with display; Descaling instructions

These Philips espresso machines have a display.

1) Go into the MENU and select “Start Calc Clean”.

2) Press the CAPPUCCINO button to select descaling.

3) The machine reminds you to insert the milk carafe filled with water and pull out the milk carafe dispenser to the right.

4) The descaler symbol appears on the display.

5) Pour the entire bottle of Saeco descaling solution into the water tank.

6) Top up the water tank with fresh tap water to the CALC CLEAN line.

7) Place the water tank back into the machine.

8) Place a bowl underneath the milk carafe dispenser and the coffee dispensing spout.

9) Press the CAPPUCCINO button to start the descaling cycle.

10) The machine will start dispensing the descaling solution at regular intervals. The bar on the display shows the progress. This takes about 20 minutes.

Note: The descaling cycle can be paused by pressing the ESPRESSO button. To resume, press the CAPPUCCINO button again.

11) When the mixture of descaling solution and water has been used up, the water tank empty symbol appears on the display.

12) Rinse the water tank and fill it with fresh water to the MAX level and then put it back. The start rinsing symbol appears on the display.

13) Fill the milk carafe with water up to the MIN level and insert it into the machine.

14) Pull out the milk carafe dispenser to the right.

15) Put the bowl back.

16) Press the CAPPUCCINO button and the machine starts the rinsing cycle.

17) When the CALC CLEAN OK symbol appears on the display, the rinsing cycle is complete.

Note: If the WATER TANK symbol appears on the display instead of the CALC CLEAN OK symbol, you did not fill the water tank up to the MAX level. Refill the water tank up to the MAX level and perform another rinsing cycle. Repeat steps 12-17 until the CALC CLEAN OK symbol appears. You may have to do this several times before the ready symbol appears.

18) Press the CAPPUCCINO button to exit.

19) The machine warms up and performs the automatic rinse cycle.

20) The machine is ready for use.

Philips 3000 series, machines with no display; Descaling instructions

1) Empty the drip tray and coffee ground container.

2) Remove the Classic Milk Frother/Automatic milk frother from the steam/hot water wand. For machines that have a hot water spout, insert the hot water spout.

3) Remove the extra water filter (INTENZA+) from the water tank (optional).

4) Pour the entire bottle of Saeco descaling solution into the water tank.

5) Top up the water tank with fresh tap water to the CALC CLEAN line.

6) Place the water tank back into the machine.

7) Place a bowl underneath the steam/hot water wand and the coffee dispensing spout.

8) Press and hold the CALC CLEAN button for at least 3 seconds to start the descaling cycle. The ESPRESSO button will start to shine steadily and the CALC CLEAN button will flash throughout the cycle.

9) The descaling cycle light starts to shine steadily and the machine will start dispensing the descaling solution at regular intervals. This takes about 20 minutes.

Note: The descaling cycle can be paused by pressing the Espresso button. To resume, press the Espresso button again.

10) When the mixture of descaling solution and water has been used up, the NO WATER light lights up continuously.

11) Rinse the water tank and fill it with fresh water to the MAX level and then put it back. The rinsing cycle light will shine steadily.

12) Put the bowl back.

13) When the ESPRESSO button flashes, press it to start the rinsing cycle.

14) When the rinsing cycle is finished the CALC CLEAN button light goes out.

Note: If the water tank empty symbol appears on the display and the CALC CLEAN button light does not go out, repeat steps 11-13 until the CALC CLEAN button light goes out.

15) The machine heats up and performs an automatic rinsing cycle. The ESPRESSO and COFFEE buttons flash simultaneously.

16) Remove the drip tray, rinse it and put it back.

17) The machine is ready for use.

Philips 2100 easy cappuccino series; Descaling instructions

1) Switch off the machine.

Note: If you do not switch off the machine, you cannot begin descaling.

2) Empty the drip tray and put it back. Remove the automatic milk frother (if present).

3) Empty the water tank and remove the Intenza water filter (if present).

4) Pour the entire bottle of the Philips/Saeco descaling solution into the water tank.

5) Add water to the descaling solution in the water tank up to the MAX level indication.

6) Make sure the control dial is set to the COFFEE BEAN icon.

7) Place a bowl under the hot water/steam wand and coffee dispensing spout.

8) Make sure the machine is switched OFF. Press the ESPRESSO button and CAPPUCCINO button simultaneously for approximately 5 seconds. The orange descaling light flashes slowly during the entire descaling cycle.

9) Turn the control dial to the HOT WATER icon and brew hot water. Let hot water flow out of the hot water/steam wand for 10 seconds.

10) Turn the control dial back to the SINGLE BEAN icon. Wait approximately 1 minute to let the descaling solution act.

11) Press the ESPRESSO button to brew a cup of espresso. Wait approximately 1 minute to let the descaling solution act.

Note: During the descaling process, the coffee grinding function does not work. If you press the espresso button, only water will flow out of the machine.

12) Repeat steps 10-11 until the NO WATER light lights up continuously.

13) Remove the water tank from the machine and rinse it.

14) Fill the water tank with fresh tap water up to the MAX indication and slide the water tank back into the machine.

15) Empty the big cup and place it back onto the drip tray under the hot water/steam wand.

16) Press the ESPRESSO button and brew a cup of espresso. Repeat this twice.

17) Turn the control dial to the HOT WATER icon.

18) Let hot water flow out of the hot water/steam wand until the NO WATER light lights up continuously.

19) Remove the drip tray, rinse it and put it back.

20) Reattach the automatic milk frother.

21) Remove the water tank and rinse it.

22) Fill the water tank with fresh tap water up to the MAX indication and slide the water tank back into the machine.

23) Press the on/off button to switch off the machine. When you switch the machine back on, it is ready for use again.

Philips 2000 series with control dial; Descaling instructions

1) Switch off the machine.

2) Empty the drip tray and put it back.

3) Empty the water tank and pour the entire Philips/Saeco descaling solution into it. Fill it up with fresh water to the MAX level and put it back.

4) Place a large container under the steam/water wand.

5) Turn the control dial to the central BEAN position.

6) Press the ESPRESSO and COFFEE buttons at the same time for 5 seconds. The machine dispenses the descaling solution into the drip tray internally at several one-minute intervals. It does not dispense through the hot water/steam wand. This will take approximately 5 minutes. The orange descaling light starts flashing slowly and will continue to do so during the entire descaling cycle.

7) When the green TWO CUPS light shines steadily, turn the control dial to the HOT WATER position. After approximately 1 minute, the machine dispenses at several one-minute intervals through the hot water/steam wand until the water tank is empty. This takes around 15 minutes.

8) When the green TWO CUPS light is flashing slowly, turn the control dial to the central BEAN position. The TWO CUPS light turns off and the red NO WATER light starts to shine steadily.

9) Remove and empty the container and drip tray and put them back.

10) Remove the water tank, rinse it and fill it up to the MAX level with fresh water. Put it back into the machine.

11) When the green TWO CUPS light starts to shine steadily, turn the control dial to the HOT WATER position. The machine performs a short circuit priming. The orange descaling light does double flashes during the whole rinse cycle.

12) When the green TWO CUPS light starts flashing slowly, turn the control dial to the central BEAN position. The machine dispenses water internally into the drip tray. It does not dispense through the hot water/steam wand.

13) When the green TWO CUPS light starts to shine steadily, turn the control dial to the HOT WATER position. The machine now dispenses from the steam/water wand.

14) When the rinse cycle has been completed, the orange DESCALING light turns off and the EXCLAMATION light flashes. Turn the control dial to the central BEAN position.

15) The green STANDBY light flashes. The machine warms up and performs an automatic rinse cycle.

16) The machine is ready for use.

Philips 2000 series without control dial; Descaling instructions

1) Switch off the machine.

2) Empty the drip tray and put it back.

3) Empty the water tank and pour the entire Philips/Saeco descaling solution into it. Fill it up with fresh water to the MAX level and put it back.

4) Place a large container under the coffee dispensing spout.

5) Press the ESPRESSO button for 5 seconds. The orange DESCALING light starts flashing slowly and will continue to do so during the entire descaling cycle.

6) The machine dispenses the descaling solution through the coffee dispensing spout at several one-minute intervals until the water tank is empty. This takes about 20 minutes.

7) When the red NO WATER light turns on, remove and empty the container and drip tray and put them back.

8) Remove the water tank, rinse it and fill it up to the MAX level with fresh water. Put it back into the machine.

9) The machine starts dispensing water through the coffee dispensing spout. The orange DESCALING light does double flashes during the whole rinse cycle.

10) When the rinse cycle has been completed, the orange DESCALING light turns off and the green STAND-BY light flashes. The machine warms up and performs an automatic rinse cycle.

11) The machine is ready for use.
