Sydney, Australia – From investing hundreds of hours to coach the local junior team; to getting up early every weekend to paint fresh lines on the pitch; to raising funds for new equipment and keeping community sport alive, Australia’s dads are true unsung heroes.
So it’s with great pride that Royal Philips (NYSE: PHG, AEX: PHI) announces that nominations are now underway for the third annual Philips Community Sports Dad of the Year Award. The award is designed to reward the contributions and positive impact that Australian dads make to their families and community both on and off the sporting field.
Last year saw a surge in nominations from communities in New South Wales, which contributed to 40% of the overall votes. Queensland and Victoria, both big sport-supporting states followed with 25% of the votes each, while Western Australia and South Australia added 5% apiece.
To nominate your dad, or a dad you know for the Philips Community Sports Dad of the Year (#SportsDadOfTheYear, #SportsDad), visit www.sportsdads.com.au/community and tell Philips in no more than 100 words why your chosen dad should win. Nominations and entries close on Sunday, August 23, 2015 at 23:59, with the winner notified by phone and announced via the website on Monday 24th August, 2015. Each nomination will be individually judged according to the merits of the nominee.
The 2015 Philips Community Sports Dad of the Year winner will receive a host of prizes (valued at over $1,000 RRP) from Philips, a global leader in male grooming, as well as a $5,000 Rebel Sports voucher to donate to his community sports club of choice to help purchase new clothing or sporting equipment. Those who nominate the 2015 winner will also be in with the chance of winning male grooming products (valued at over $1,000 RRP) for their dad ahead of Father’s Day. The winner notified by phone and announced via the website on Monday 24th August, 2015.
Tom Paltridge, senior marketing manager at Philips, said: “One of the reasons this country is so successful on the global sports stage is because of the number of incredible people who do all they can to ensure there is an opportunity for locals of all ages to participate in sport at their community club. More often than not these people seek no recognition so we hope each community in Australia helps us to uncover these local legends and show them our gratitude this Father’s Day.”
The winner of the 2014 Philips Community Sports Dad of the Year was long-time Byron Bay Surf Coach Gary Timperley, a father of two and former professional surfer who now devotes his time to training local kids. He said: “I was really honoured to win the award and I thank the people who nominated me as it actually highlighted an opportunity for participation that some locals didn’t know existed. I’m privileged to train a wonderful bunch of kids who work hard, have fun, and are excited to compete in the Australian Surf Life Saving titles.”
Gary’s good fortune has continued this year again being recognised by his community as the coach of the year at the recent Surf Life Saving Far North Coast awards.
