Sydney, Australia – To celebrate World Breastfeeding Week, Pharmacy Guild of Australia was presented with the 2013 Philips AVENT Best Workplace to Express Award today at its office in St. Leonards, Sydney by campaign spokesperson, Mia Freedman and Philips Electronics ANZ Managing Director, Alan McCarthy.
The 2013 Philips AVENT Best Workplace to Express campaign received over 100 nominations from around Australia, with 10 finalists selected including Bauer Media, National Australia Bank, Thoughtworks, Woodside Energy, BHP and Thorn-Clarke Wines.
Campaign Spokesperson, Ms Freedman said that “The 2013 Philips AVENT Best Workplace to Express Award is something that is very close to my heart and is an example of the continued commitment Australian employers have to support new mums to breastfeed for longer.”
The judging committee were impressed with Pharmacy Guild of Australia’s nomination, in particular it’s commitment to providing educational sessions for the wider workplace so other employees can understand the significance of what it means for breastfeeding mothers to have access to private space,” concluded Ms Freedman.
Philips ANZ Managing Director, Alan McCarthy said that the 2013 Philips AVENT Best Workplace to Express Award was developed following a survey1 by the company to better understand how Australian employers could support new mothers return to work and continue to breastfeed.
“Our research into expressing in the Australian workplace shows that only 39 per cent of new mothers feel comfortable expressing at work and only 29 per cent were offered a comfortable and private space by their employer. These figures highlight why mothers are more likely to stop breastfeeding when they return to work and how important it is for employers to support new mothers returning to work.”
“For this inaugural award, we are proud of the high number of nominations and the wide variety of organisations who participated in the campaign. From hospitals, banks and media agencies to wineries, government departments and retailers,” said Mr McCarthy.
Belinda Nankivell, Quality Care Program State Manager at Pharmacy Guild of Australia, “Our employee Jordana Martin nominated us for this award and we are proud as an organisation to be recognised by our staff for contributing to increased work and life balance by offering a family friendly workplace. For the Guild it makes good business sense to offer these services to attract and retain high calibre staff like Jordana.”
