Philips announces LUMEA, its first professional IPL hair removal system for home

LUMEA is set to change women’s beauty routines, offering freedom from unwanted hair and perfectly smooth skin every day

March 17, 2011

Sydney, Australia – Philips, committed to bringing simplicity to people’s lives, announces the launch of LUMEA, its first at-home IPL hair removal system for safe, easy use in the comfort of the home.

Philips LUMEA uses Intense Pulsed Light (IPL), the latest advanced technology used by the professional beauty industry for hair removal – adapted for use at home. Women can now say goodbye to expensive courses of salon laser treatments, painful waxing sessions, short-term results and unsightly reactions like in-grown hairs and shaving rashes.

Gentle pulses of light are applied directly to the hair, resulting in the follicle going into a resting phase and shedding naturally. A simple and gentle treatment once every two to four weeks prevents new hair from growing back, ensuring beautifully smooth and ready to reveal skin every day and all year round.

LUMEA features five adjustable light settings, ensuring a gentle and optimum treatment across a wide variety of skin tones and hair colours while an integrated UV filter and advanced safety controls provide maximum protection for skin.

A specially developed lamp does not require replacement during its lifetime and the cordless device, offering the freedom to move around and use in any setting, recharges easily and efficiently in one hour.

“Having worked globally with leading dermatologists for almost seven years in the field of light-based hair removal, Philips is excited to introduce LUMEA, the first product of its kind by Philips, and make this technology available for consumers to use safely and effectively in the comfort of their own homes,” said Peter Bosscher, Senior Manager Business Development Personal Care & Domestic Appliances for Philips Australia & New Zealand.

Consulting US dermatologist Vic A. Narukar says of this development: “Intense Pulsed Light is a technology that has been in use since 1997 for hair removal, among other aesthetic techniques. Philips, with deep experience in science and technology, has now developed a device for safe use at home, using Intense Pulsed Light technology. The device offers adjustable light settings for different skin types, an integrated light filter to protect skin from UV Rays and an automatic switch-off to prevent overheating. This is truly a brilliant marriage between technology and efficacy.”

Philips is so convinced that women will fall in love with LUMEA that – during the first months after launch – it is offering consumers a full money back guarantee for the first 90 days after purchasing the product.

In Australia Philips LUMEA is now available via Shaver Shop stores at a recommended retail price of AUD 1199.95.
